Fab-u-lash Lashes

Happy Friday!! 😁

I hear on a regular basis that people would prefer not to cleanse or wash their lashes after having eyelash extensions. To be honest, I think way back when I first started having mine done I thought the same – the thought process being that if you wash them, more will fall out. You want to try and leave them alone as much as possible right? Surely that is the best way to stop you from losing them……

In fact, it is very important to keep your eyelash extensions clean and I want to touch on why this is and also how I would recommend to keep them clean.

If you avoid cleaning your lashes this will result in oiliness, residue and grime building up which will end up breaking down the lash glue. Our skin of course naturally produces oils and our lashes are there to protect the eyes from dust and debris – so it actually makes sense that it is important to clean all this off. Oils and lash glue do not go together, these two are like partners in crime set out to remove your lash techs beautiful work and your fabulous set of lashes! *Cue horror music and hands to face*. More to the extreme, by not cleaning your lashes you could end up with all sorts of infections, irritations, poor lash health/growth and even lash mites (believe it or not, these tiny creatures are real!) No one wants a gammy eye do they, it’s not pretty, especially when you have treated yourself to a set of lashes.

This is an example of what can happen when eyelash extensions are left unwashed (this is not one of my clients it’s an image from the Internet)…..

So, how do we keep them clean? It’s not a massive task to add to your daily routine. Which is great for people like me who are pretty slack when it comes to skin care routines in general. Just add it in when washing your face morning and night. It doesn’t even necessarily need to be every day, every other day should do the trick – unless you are like me who tends to get oily skin, you may want to do this once a day, or if you are heavy make up wearer. I tend to do mine each morning and only again in the evening if I have had eye make up on. Some people prefer to just do the eyelash cleanse in the evening – it’s up to you what suits you best!

Step by step guide

  1. If you can get yourself a cleanser specifically for eyelashes, then this is great and is the better option (but as far as I am aware this isn’t something you can pick up from your local Superdrug or Boots – you will need to buy online) My go to lash cleanser is from Lashbase, it is PH neutral and oil free – to view CLICK HERE. When I am out of cleanser (which luckily doesn’t happen now since I’ve been doing lashes!) I would use baby shampoo – I will be honest, there is a lot of information out there on the Internet about saying not to use this as it doesn’t have the same effect as a lash cleanser and isn’t specifically made for the eye area – back in the day when I started having my lashes done this was the gold standard of lash cleansing, but with more research and as the lash industry evolves, it seems we are steering away from this. So, do try to get a professional lash cleanser if you can.
  2. Using a cleansing brush I gently brush the cleanser over my lashes being careful not to be too heavy handed! You can use your fingers if you do not have a brush – but I find the brush gives a much better clean between the lashes.
  3. Once you have rinsed off any remaining cleanser from your eyes – pat them dry with a towel or cotton pad. DO NOT RUB THEM.
  4. I then use a make up applicator (I have no idea of their actual name but they can be used as multiple make up applicators!) I find these great to get rid of any excess water and to help fan back out the lashes. These are a cheap little tool that can be purchased online places such as Ebay or Amazon. They look like this
  5. Finally I brush over my lash. SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN, CLEAN. Most lash techs will give you a brush to use at the end of your appointment, but if you require more, again these are a relatively cheap item that you can get on Amazon and eBay.
  6. If I have worn eye make up or heavy make up – in the evenings to remove this I use micellar water. My fave is Garnier – you will often find this on offer somewhere! It is great as it is oil free and I find this stuff really does the job. To view please CLICK HERE. Again, when removing the eye make up, be gentle with no vigorous rubbing.
  7. Any additional products I use in my skincare routine, I try to keep as many oil free as possible.

It is also really important to go to your lash appointments with clean lashes, the same way that you would brush your teeth before going to the dentist. If you are having a new fresh set of lashes, do not wear any mascara as removing this is a longer process and will eat into your appointment time. If you are a mascara wearer I would recommend giving the lashes an extra going over before hand to remove it – often it may look like you have removed most of it but once you get under a lash technicians blinding bright light and their magnifying lense, there can often still be a lot left to remove. Mascara residue can cause problems with the glue resulting in your new lash extensions not lasting as long.

CLEAN LASHES = HAPPY LASHES (and happy lash technicians too 😁)

Better an OOPS than a WHAT IF

Well well well…….what a long time it has been. I kept thinking about closing my blog as I haven’t done anything with it in so long….but deep down I feel like I haven’t finished with the whole blog world, there is something thereputic about writing, sharing ideas, thoughts, feelings, or what ever it may be that I ramble on about! Even if each post reaches only one person, or if I am lucky enough to get multiple views – regardless, thank you for stopping by to read this 🙂

so…..a big hello! I’M BACK!

A few things have changed over the past year……one thing being that I have started something new, which will probably be a big topic for me on my blog – eyelash extensions! I have always had an interest in beauty – I currently have a full time job in mixed roles of finance and customer service, which is the complete other end of the scale I guess! – but I do have a beauty background working in a salon, trained in manicure/pedicure treatments and I also worked for L’Oreal in their social media/customer service team. I am a girly girl and I do love a good pamper, especially having my lashes done. Lashes are life – I cannot live without them (OK, dramatic statement alert, maybe not quite to that extreme but you know what I mean). It saves me so much time not having to put on mascara, they are longer, curlier and fluffier than my natural lashes and quite honestly on my ugly working weekdays in the office with no make up, scraped back greasy hair, naked nails and just overly feeling a bit troll like (what a picture of myself I have created) – I believe my pretty lashes give me a little something. (Dramatic again? Me? Never.)

How I feel when I have no lashes:

I had thought about doing lashes for SOOOOOO long – but forever managed to talk myself out of it.

“It will be too hard I won’t be able to do that”

“What if I spend the money to do it and I don’t like it”

“Have I really got the time”

“What if I am really rubbish”

“It is too late now”

My list of negative thoughts were endless. But let me break each of these points down.

Yes, it probably will be hard, but what if I could do it? Anything is possible with practise.

What if I spend the money on it and LOVE it, and make that money back? What about if I make even more money on top of that??

It’s about making the time for the things you want to do.

You have got to be a beginner before anything else, so to start with you won’t be perfect! And no one expects you to be!

I spent so long in my 20’s saying I was too old…….I wish I started this back then, I definitely wasn’t too old. I am now 32 and realise I am in fact, not too old to do anything I want to do.

In these situations do you know what you need? A really good group of people around you. Honestly. The ones that big you up and have faith you can do anything you want to. The ones that can talk you into it, not out of it. The ones who are positive. Surround yourself with people who get it. My little crew pushed me to do this and they continue to push me to be a success daily (thanks guys and gals, big love). If people aren’t doing this for you – reconsider your circle. I totally think how you make others feel about themselves, says a lot about you. They managed to change my negative thoughts of ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘actually I can’, but it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Don’t expect to be an expert over night and then when you don’t wake up with all the knowledge, don’t just give up and quit. STICK AT IT. Rome wasn’t built in a day as they say.

Also, talk to people who are already doing whatever it is you want to do – you may look at photos of their work thinking how amazing they are and you could never compare, but everyone starts somewhere – most likely they haven’t always been as good as they are now! You have to be patient and put in the hard work. Ask them about it – I am sure they will be honest about how they have got to where they are now and may be able to give you some helpful tips.

So, I went for it – dived right in, I loved the training and I am completely loving continuing to improve and build on my lash journey. I am going to blog again about my training and all things lash related in coming weeks – this particular blog is aimed as a bit of a refresh for me as I have been off wordpress for almost a year (what a slacker) and to brace you for many more lash related posts – but it is mainly to get one point across…….and I have said it already – Better an oops than a what if. That thing you have been thinking of doing? DO IT. YES YOU! YOU CAN DO IT! It is fine to be afraid, but just do it anyway. What’s important is your actions. You don’t have to wait to be confident, just do it and the confidence will follow. The biggest regret will be that you didn’t start sooner 🙂

Here is some of my lash work so far – future lash boss in the making I am hoping! 👸🏼

I also received my certificate today! – I am chuffed, I have already put it up in my lash room!

I would love to hear the hobbies/jobs you have dreamt of doing that perhaps you have been putting off – maybe it’s your time to start?! Or if you are in a similar situation to me and have started something you have wanted to do for ages but you put it off because of similar reasons – what’s your story? Any advise you have for other readers or myself – please comment below!

I hope you have a fab weekend!

There she glows…

I hold my hands up! I definitely do not have the best skin care routine out there…I will admit it, I am lazy. Even though I own zillions of products, I don’t always do the whole cleanse, tone, serum, eye serum, moisturise, blah blah yawn and the rest of it. Even on occasions – usually after one too many G&T’s – I don’t take my make up off at night …GUILTY.AS.CHARGED. (Cue hands on face and gasps from all the daily skin routine people out there, I tip my hat to you gods and goddesses of skin care.)

However, when I do chose to actually make the effort, I like to think I pick some great products for my skin (if I do say so myself). One of my FAVOURITE brands is Kiehl’s – and you will probably see a few blogs pop up in the future featuring their products – today it’s all about the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque. I love to get this out when my skin is looking dull and just, well bleughhh. Especially with this winter weather –  we work so hard on concentrating on keeping it protected in the summer, we forget about it at this time of year! But what about the harsh cold weather on your skin?! It can be just as damaging!

It contains unique ingredients from near the Amazon river in Northern Brazil (if you can’t take me there, bringing the ingredients to me will have to do).

It has a creamy, cool, clay texture that smells clean and fresh. Applying this to my skin always feels cleansing and refreshing straight away. As it starts to dry, you can see your pores showing whilst your skin is in deep cleansing action – I find this super satisfying! Apply a thin layer avoiding the eyes, leave it on your skin for 10 mins (perfect excuse to sit down, close your eyes and relaxxxx), wipe off with warm water and – TA-DAAAA beautiful, glowy, fresh, clear skin. As simple as that.

Now what would my post be with out my handy little helper, Winston….

Key ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera – soothes, softens and comforts the skin
  • Amazonian White Clay – purifying and detoxifying. This helps to remove toxins, excess oil and dead cells.
  • Bentonite – absorbs oil and helps to reduce shine

This product is ideal to use once or twice a week…..or if you are like me and don’t quite stick to a routine as such – just when you remember your skin needs a pick me up every now and again! – Then get this face mask out and have a little fix of loveliness in a pot.

This retails at £21.50, and I think it is really worth the spend. Currently on the Kiehl’s UK website you get 3 complimentary samples and free delivery too!

Share your thoughts below if you have used this product too!

Perhaps my New Years resolution should be to make more effort with my skin care routine…Glowing skin is always in.

Lots of love,

Lisa & Winston 👸🏼🐾
