If life gives you lemons…Make a Disaronno Sour

Happy weekend everyone! After a busy week, I have been very much looking forward to a quiet Friday night in. And what way to make it better than to add a cocktail to my evening (or maybe two!) 

I like to try different cocktails and experiment with different ingredients – I would love to have a little cocktail bar! I live in an area that has almost everything – but I think it’s missing a good bar – a nice place to relax after a long day, with lots of cocktail offers (why limit happy to just an hour?!) and with a fabulous atmosphere that everyone talks about and loves to pop in! But my kitchen is the closest I think I will be getting to that, so for now my (non paying) customers are my friends and fiancé.

My fiancé (Dayne) LOVES a fruity drink – often when we go out he will pick a real snazzy cocktail (that has all the sparkles and decorations you can think of lol) but one of his absolute faves is a simple Disaronno Sour. 

Now, there are a few variations to making a Disaronno Sour, and Dayne is very particular at the type he likes. From my understanding the obvious difference between what he counts as a good one and a bad one, is egg whites. If you are anything like me the thought of drinking egg whites makes you feel a bit ill…..but I will say to give it a try, as you might just change your mind (like I did).

Ingredients

  • 50ml Disaronno
  • 25ml lemon juice
  • 5ml sugar syrup
  • Egg white 

Have a jar or a tumbler with ice at the ready. Simply add all the ingredients into a shaker, give it a good mix up…..pour over ice and TA-DA – one delicious Disaronno Sour. 

Tip: separating your egg white – I’ve seen all these fancy ways and gadgets to remove the yolk from an egg, when a friend gave me a very simple solution – by using your hands. Of course wash your hands before (and after!). Crack the egg, have your hand slightly opened to allow the egg white to run through your fingers into a bowl/container beneath, and you will be left with the yolk in your hand – EASY PEASY. (The egg yolks can be kept to use for a carbonara, or even a hair mask apparently?! I’ve not tried the latter!)

This classic cocktail is refreshing with a sweet taste and a sour twist. It can be done without egg whites, but I have to say it does not give it the same finish, and personally I do not think it tastes anywhere near as good.
